Miscellaneous Musings

By Jan A. Larson

Some columnists resort to writing lists of random thoughts when they run out of material.  In this case there is so much material this week that I thought I would compile a compendium of comments to try to cover it all.

Liberals, the epitome of tolerance and acceptance that they are, shouted down both Ann Coulter and Hillary Clinton.  So much for tolerance and acceptance.  The abuse of Hillary was especially demonstrative - liberals eating their own.

A lot of "enlightened" evolutionists dismiss the notion of a Creator as nothing more than the primitive resolution of the reality of Earth and mankind by those incapable of understanding the universe around them.  I wonder if such enlightened people just may not be as enlightened as they think?  The truly open-minded cannot dismiss the possibility of intelligent design for the simple reason that no one knows, nor ever will know, just how all of this came to be.

If you run down the aisle of an airplane shouting that you have a bomb, expect to get shot.  Had the air marshals in Miami hesitated and a bomb been detonated by Rigoberto Alpizar, killing dozens of people, those that are now claiming that the marshals used excessive force would be claiming that the air marshals failed to do their job.

No matter how many children's books he writes, Tookie Williams will never bring back the four people whose lives he cowardly chose to terminate with a shotgun.  Unless Governor Schwarzeneggar gets weak in the knees, justice will be served at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

The confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito looks to become contentious over a single issue - abortion.  All judicial appointments are contentious over this one issue only.  No one ever argues that a nominee may or may not try to overturn the Dred Scott decision.

What is it with Democratic presidential election losers?  John Kerry, much like Al Gore before him, continues to jump in front of the microphones and act like he's campaigning.  That is, he says the same dumb things now as he did before the election, accusing American soldiers of atrocities.  This time in Iraq, not Vietnam.

Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman has rankled fellow Democrats by not only failing to vigorously denounce everything that the President does, but to actually come out in support of the administration's Iraq policy.  Some Dems are crying heresy and the radical left-wing group MoveOn.org is collecting signatures for a letter criticizing the Senator.  Again, liberals eating one of their own.

It is amazing how countering opposition misinformation, a booming economy and falling gasoline prices can do for a president's job approval ratings.

General Motors announced 30,000 layoffs a few weeks ago.  Ford announced that they would also lay off approximately 30,000 workers, nearly one-third of the company's workforce.  As sales slump for the two American manufacturing giants, Japanese manufacturer Toyota continues to gain market share.  The lesson is that the free market cannot be defeated in the long run.  People will buy where they get the most for their money.  Labor unions will never change that no matter their demands.

The last time I heard, no one in the entire history of the company has ever been forced to work at Wal-Mart.  How is it then that Wal-Mart can get away with treating their employees so badly?  Of course that isn't the case, but several labor unions that are currently shut out of Wal-Mart would have you believe otherwise.  Why does Wal-Mart oppose these unions?  See GM and Ford.  In a world economy, labor unions are a cancer on American businesses.

The Republicans could not have chosen a better person to be the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee than Howard Dean.
