Deal-of-the-Week: Movielink(TM)−Download Hollywood Movies & New Releases October 17, 2004 What is the Deal with Green Acres? By Jan A. Larson Some readers may remember the 1960's comedy, Green Acres that starred Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor. Albert played New York-attorney-turned-farmer Oliver Douglas. The premise of Green Acres was that Douglas, fed up with the "rat race" of the city, decides to pursue a dream to own a farm outside a community of bumpkins called Hooterville. Each episode put Oliver in various hilarious situations where he interacted with his hayseed neighbors, his bubble-headed wife and neighborhood con man, Mr. Haney. Mr. Haney was constantly trying to sell Oliver some sort of Rube Goldberg-type contraption that promised to solve whatever problem Oliver was facing. John Kerry is a lot like Mr. Haney and I feel like Oliver Douglas. Kerry wants to sell the American public a Rube Goldberg-like bag of middle class tax cuts, cheap healthcare, millions of jobs and a potion that can turn the war against terrorism into nothing more than an irritation. Exasperated as Oliver may have become with Mr. Haney's absurd offerings, he rarely was taken in by Haney's salesmanship My exasperation with Kerry's promises is equal to Oliver's disdain for Mr. Haney's line of farm products. From raising the minimum wage that will hurt those it is ostensibly designed to help to insisting on no changes in Social Security despite the looming Social Security trainwreck a couple of decades from now to raising taxes on the creators of jobs, Kerry's economic proposals are every bit as nonsensical as the machines on Mr. Haney's truck. I'm sure I would not feel any trepidation about Kerry's many "plans" for solving America's ills if not for the fact that I see far too many Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers on vehicles driven by the Fred Ziffels, Newt Kileys and Lisa Douglases of America. Will America buy Kerry's snake oil? For the sake of all of us that don't live in Hooterville, I certainly hope not. -- Send feedback to the author.
