Zawahiri Confirms Dems' Strategy is Working

By Jan A. Larson

The John Murtha, Nancy Pelosi, Howard Dean wing of the Democratic Party (that is, pretty much the entire Democratic Party with the notable exception of Joe Lieberman) received confirmation last week that their strategy for Iraq (cut and run) is working.  That confirmation came from none other than al Qaeda's second in command, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, in a taped message broadcast on the al Qaeda News Network otherwise known as Al-Jazerra.

As quoted in a Fox News article, Al-Zawahiri declared a victory in Iraq, "I congratulate [the Islamic nation] for the victory of Islam in Iraq."

This is simply confirmation of what everyone with an ounce of sense already knows.  Al Qaeda's plan for Iraq is to simply wait out the U. S.  When the will to continue the fight is gone at home, the U. S. will retreat and they will win.  When Murtha, Pelosi, Dean, et al continue to call the war a mistake, question why we are in Iraq and demand timetables for troop withdrawals, they are simply playing the roles that Al-Zawahiri and bin Laden (if he's still alive) would have scripted for them.

Al-Zawahiri continued, "You remember I told you more than a year ago that the American withdrawal from Iraq is only a matter of time, and here they are now."

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announced in December that U. S troop levels in Iraq would be drawn down below the 138,000 that had been deployed for the past year.

It is my personal view that even if the President and Secretary Rumsfeld had planned to draw down troop levels in 2006, they would not have announced it when they did or even at all without the political pressure generated by the Democrats and resulting public pressure.  The mere fact that Al-Zawahiri is now reveling in his "victory" is absolute proof that reducing the number of troops in Iraq at this point in time plays into the enemy's hands.

Want more proof?  Zawahiri also said, "Bush was forced at the end of last year to announce that he will pull out his forces from Iraq, but he was giving excuses for his withdrawal that the Iraqi forces have reached a good level."  He continued, "[American forces] with their planes, missiles, tanks and fleets are mourning and bleeding, seeking for a getaway from Iraq" and also added, "Regarding your withdrawal timetable ... you have to admit, Bush, that you have been defeated in Iraq and are being defeated in Afghanistan and will be defeated in Palestine."

Al-Zawahiri comments should be proof-positive to every American that the enemy's strategy for Iraq is to break the will of America to fight.

I will offer that breaking the will of the American people to continue the fight is the very cornerstone of al Qaeda and the various insurgent groups' strategy in Iraq.  For that very reason another very important piece of the enemy's strategy is to keep the American public and politicians divided on the war.

It is for this reason that I believe that there has been no large-scale, coordinated attack on the United States since September 11, 2001.  The administration will say that there have been no attacks due to their vigilance and increased security, but it is my assertion that any attack on the scale of September 11 would be counter-productive to al Qaeda's goals.  An attack would once again galvanize the American people and that is exactly the opposite of what al Qaeda needs in order to win.

It couldn't be clearer than the wild-eyed look on Nancy Pelosi's face that a timetable for withdrawal, announced withdrawals and the continued drumbeat for withdrawal from some so-called "leaders" in Congress will certainly assure a defeat in Iraq.  Such a defeat would have devastating consequences for not only the Iraqi people, but to the United States and to western civilization.

If Iraq ultimately falls under the control of al Qaeda-aligned leadership and there is no American presence in the region, there will be nothing that we will ever be able to do to prevent that region from becoming a teeming boiling pot of terrorism which would undoubtedly be exported throughout the world with devastating consequences.

We will never be safer in the United States as we are when we have troops in Iraq fighting the terrorists where they live.  We will never be in more danger than if we withdraw before the mission is complete.
